Very rarely, particularly if a person travels out of the country, the parasite Schistosoma species can cause an irritating UTI. I have personally seen this before, but it is very rare. The urine will have Schistosoma eggs (ova) in it, which are shown in the images below. Schistosoma haematobium is the one associated with the urinary fluke, referred to as urinary schistosomiasis.
Individuals with this infection will have hematuria and fibrosis of the bladder due to calcification. This results in pain and pressure on the bladder, ureters and kidneys, resulting in hydronephrosis. Because of the inflammatory nature of this disease, it is associated with squamous cell carcinoma (cancer) of the bladder. The eggs/ova and flukes are prevalent in Africa and in the Middle East.
